Sarah Louise Ramsay, is a London-based professional photographer who has been working since the early ’90s. Renowned for her research-driven, reality-based approach, Sarah believes fundamentally in the sameness of people. Her work seeks to create a genuine connection between viewer and subject, capturing real issues and situations with meticulous attention to detail while revealing the wider social and political narratives within individual human moments.

Her career began assisting on location and in studios across London. Early personal projects in Cuba and Australia became the catalyst for her first advertising commissions, setting her on a career that would take her around the world and into some fairly questionable positions in pursuit of a photograph.

Over the years, Sarah has precariously leaned out of cars while shooting other cars, climbed Australian dunes for British Airways, hung out of a helicopter photographing salmon in Scottish lochs for Waitrose, and had a camera spectacularly knocked from her hand by a rearing horse at the San Juan Festival in Minorca. She has fended off the advances of a renegade cowboy, slept in a swag bag in Australia’s Snowy Mountains while photographing Brumbies, and somehow raised three amazing daughters along the way.

Sarah describes photography as a never-ending series of adventures, but beneath the escapades is a serious commitment to people and their stories. She believes in empowering individuals within their communities, celebrating who they are regardless of social status, judgement or diplomatic challenges. Her work pushes boundaries and expectations while giving people the space to be seen on their own terms.

Her award-winning photography has received numerous accolades and was nominated for the Prix Pictet Award 2025. Her work has been exhibited at prestigious venues and festivals internationally, including the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition. Personal work, however, remains at the heart of everything Sarah does. “When I get out there and shoot with only a lightweight portable studio in a backpack, well then I am in my happy place.”

Her work continues to investigate identity, community, resilience and the often complex relationship between people and the environments they inhabit. For Sarah, photography is ultimately about connection getting close enough to people and places to see beyond the obvious, finding the extraordinary in real life, and occasionally hanging out of a helicopter to do it.
